Playlistin': Top 10 Song Lyrics About World Series Baseball
Nelly's very first MVP baseball card — we're so proud!
It's that time of year again. Major League Baseball's World Series is here as the latest season of America's Favorite Pastime draws to a close. This year's "Fall Classic" pits the American League champion Texas Rangers against the National League winning St. Louis Cardinals as they vie for the coveted title of world champs.
If you've ever taken in a ball game in person, you know music is a big part of the game. From the anthems to the organs to the seventh inning stretch, it's all part of the ball park atmosphere. So with that musical tradition in mind, we've put together a list of songs that embody the baseball experience for those of you that are stuck on the couch for this year's World Series!
1. Batter Up - Nelly, St. Lunatics
I said but now we're up in the big leagues, my dirty insides turn at bat / And just as long as we livin', it's Lunatics player / It ain't nothin' wrong with that, batter up
It's a given: hip-hop's official baseball anthem is Nelly & St. Lunatics "Batter Up". Sure, they may be talking about their place in the rap game and using baseball as a metaphor, but there's no doubt about it — you immediately think of America's Favorite Pastime when you hear this track!
2. Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen
I had a friend was a big baseball player / Back in high school / He could throw that speedball by you / Make you look like a fool boy
Next up to bat (see what I did there?) is Bruce Springsteen's classic about way-back-when, "Glory Days". Bruce is a HUGE baseball nut, playing the sport as he grew up and talking about his ball-playing years when performing this song in concert.
3. Talkin' Softball - The Simpsons
We're talkin' softball / From Maine to San Diego / Talkin' softball / Mattingly and Canseco
In true Simpsons fashion, this song from the episode "Homer at the Bat" is a parody of the 1981 tune "Talkin' Baseball" by Terry Cashman. We kinda prefer this version because of the nostalgia factor (such a good episode!) and the name drops of all the famous baseball players (Ken Griffey Jr, Daryl Strawberry, etc).
4. Centerfield - John Fogerty
Oh, put me in, Coach, I'm ready to play, today / Put me in, Coach, I'm ready to play, today / Look at me, I can be Center field
This baseball-themed song is never left off playlists about the classic sport, so we obviously had to include it! Even the video contains a bunch of vintage clips of baseballers in action.
5. (Love Is Like A) Baseball Game - The Intruders
Strike one - She took me by surprise / Strike two - Right in front of my eyes / Strike three - Oh, I was out without a doubt / Oh, I was out
The Intruders say that love is like a baseball game because it's three strikes then you're out. Their girlfriends sound pretty forgiving!
6. Tessie - Dropkick Murphys
Boston, you are the only, only, only / Don't blame us if we ever doubt you / You know we couldn't live without you / Red Sox, you are the only, only, only
These Massachusetts boys wrote Tessie for the Red Sox to play after a win at Fenway Park and it was even used in that baseball movie Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore!
7. Swing - Trace Adkins
Everybody strikes out nine times out of ten / But you got to step up to the plate son
This pumped-up song is all about what it's like to strike out with a woman. It seems like a lot of people like to compare love to baseball! The part where Trace's friend "strikes out" after asking a woman what her sign is makes us laugh — worst pickup line ever!
8. Don't Call Them Twinkies - The Baseball Project
We've got Justin, we've got Joe / That's enough reason to party / We don't buy our titles and we've still won two World Series
This song is written and performed by The Hold Steady's Craig Finn and it has become sort of an unofficial anthem for the Minnesota Twins. In the lyrics, he name-checks no less than 8 Minnesota cities, 2 neighborhoods, 2 streets, 9 Twins players and 2 coaches in just over 4 minutes! Talk about a mouthful! GO TWINS!
9. We Like Sportz - The Lonely Island
Kiv: Throw me the baseball. / Jorma: Now toss me the pig skin. / Kiv: Now feed me the rock.
This song is for everyone who has ever been a true sports fan. JUST KIDDING! It's just about two geeky guys trying to be cool and pretend they like every sport. The result is one word: hilarious.
10. Take Me Out To The Ballgame
For it's one, two, three strikes you're out / At the old ball game!
This song has been done by so many people and EVERYONE knows it, right? Well, we had to include it as well as this amazing Baseball-Cat themed video. Just make sure you have your peanuts and crackerjacks by your side as you crack up to this classic.
