Britney Spears' eighth studio album, Britney Jean, hits the shelves December 3rd. A little over a week ago, Britney took to the web to give fans insight into the album ahead of its release. But instead of sending out a few tweets or a PR blast, Britney penned a personal letter to her fans to deliver her message. "I have been through a lot in the past few years and it has really inspired me to dig deeper and write songs that I think everyone can relate to," Britney says in the letter. It's fitting then that she's following up her first single "Work, B**ch" with "Perfume," the soon-to-be released second single from the album. "Perfume" is a song about jealousy, a feeling that just about all of us can relate at some point.
MetroLyrics officially premiered the "Perfume" lyrics today, written , which you can read in full right here. But we're going to do one better and take a closer look at the lyrics, breaking them down. So take a deep breath and travel inside the lyrics of "Perfume" with us below:
"Do I imagine it, or do I see your stare
Is there still longing there?
Oh I hate myself, and I feel crazy
Such a classic tale"
Have you ever been out with your significant other and noticed them staring longingly into space? Britney has. And she suspects her man's thinking about — gasp — another woman! But that's crazy talk, right?
"Current girl friend, ex girlfriend, I'm trying to be cool
Am I being paranoid, am I seeing things?
Am I just insecure?"
Britney has been pretty open about her break-up with ex-fiancé Jason Trawick and how it affected the subject matter on this album. "Perfume" bears the classic hallmarks of a relationship on the rocks: distrust, self-doubt, anxiety, and apprehension. It's possible she's over-thinking things, but the feeling that her beau is still seeing his supposed "ex-girlfriend" is driving BritBrit mad!
"I want to believe
It's just you and me
Sometimes it feels like there's three
of us in here baby"
Britney, we think you need to trust your instincts on this one. If you feel like your man's other woman is actually in the room with you when you're alone with him, that's a red flag!
"So I, wait for you to call
And I try to act natural
have you been thinking 'bout her or about me
And while I wait I put on my perfume, yeah I want it all over you
I gotta mark my territory"
We don't have to worry about Britney, guys: she knows how to handle this conundrum. As long as she's got her scent on her beau, she's marked what's hers while she plays it as cool as a cucumber.
"I'll never tell, tell on myself but I hope she smells my perfume
I'll never tell, tell on myself but I hope she smells your perfume
I hide it well, hope you can't tell but I hope she smells my perfume
I hide it well, hope you can't tell but I hope she smells my perfume"
Oops! She did it again: she kept her little secret tactic on the down-low, and nobody's the wiser. Go Britney!
"I wanna fill the room, when she's in it with you
Please don't forget me
Do I imagine it, or catch these moments
I know you got history"
Like the scent of her perfume, Britney wants her presence to overtake the room if her suspicions about her man's double-life are correct.
"But I'm your girlfriend, now I'm your girlfriend trying to be cool
I hope I'm paranoid, that I'm just seeing things
That I'm just insecure"
You know that her predicament's making BritBrit crazy because she HOPES she's seeing things! As we said before, Britney: women's intuition is never wrong. Perhaps it's time to kick this guy to the curb?
