Shakira, Haim, Bleachers Top This Week's #TrendingTuesday
We're counting down the week's best new songs & singles.
It's the second day of the work week, which means that...yep, it's Trending Tuesday! Every #TT, we fire up our Spotify player and count down the 10 best new songs and singles of the week. For the week of February 25th, we've got a new hit from an up-and-coming Brooklyn foursome, as well as a hot new track from a member of Fun. -- not to mention a ballad that only Shakira could deliver! So join us in checking out the best songs of the week this Trending Tuesday:
10. Twin Forks - Cross My Mind
Why it's trending: The Twin Forks LP has officially been released, and if you're a fan of Dashboard Confessional, you've probably already picked up this album featuring the first single "Cross My Mind". DC's frontman Chris Carrabba started the new band Twin Forks last summer, and the band's first record is a collection of folk-pop-rock ditties that are totally spring-ready.
Best lyric line: "From time to time / You cross my mind / Good company is hard to find..."
9. Betty Who - Heartbreak Dream
Why it's trending: Alt-pop singer/songwriter Betty Who is definitely a name you'll be seeing more of in 2014. With her debut LP Slow Dancing set for release this year, the Australian native released the single "Heartbreak Dream" which could possibly be from the new album. It's hard to take the melancholic lyrics so seriously when the song is so energetic!
Best lyric line: "In a moment / You were everything to me / In this moment / We're living in a heartbreak dream..."
8. ScHoolboy Q - Collard Greens (ft. Kendrick Lamar)
Why it's trending: Last year was rapper Kendrick Lamar's big breakout year in hip-hop, and we predict that 2014 will be the breakout year for friend and label-mate ScHoolboy Q. This song they did together, "Collard Greens", for Q's debut Oxymoron, is a sprawling rap anthem -- which is also a great description for the rest of the tracks off the new album.
Best lyric line: "Oh, oh, luxury / Chidi-ching-ching could buy anything, cop that / Oh, oh, collard greens..."
7. The Vamps - Wild Heart
Why it's trending: Watch out, One Direction! A new UK boy band is becoming more and more popular by the minute, and it's the foursome entitled The Vamps. If you're a fan of sugary pop-rock confections, "Wild Heart" should be right up your alley.
Best lyric line: "Tonight we'll dance, I'll be yours and you'll be mine / We won't look back, take my hand and we will shine..."
6. Beck - Wave
Why it's trending: It's finally here! Our fave musical genius Beck has dropped his latest LP Morning Phase, and it's like his older album Sea Change with modern production. "Wave" is a haunting, slow song that creeps up on you kind of like a wave would.
Best lyric line: "If I surrender / And I don't fight this wave / No I won't go under / I'll only get carried away..."
5. Haim - If I Could Change Your Mind
Why it's trending: As the latest single off the Haim sisters' first LP Days Are Gone, not only do we love "If I Could Change Your Mind", the song's music video has gotten people talking. Just because you play instruments in a rock band doesn't mean you can't choreographically dance to your own jam!
Best lyric line: "If I could change your mind / I would hit the ground running / It took time to realize / And I never saw it coming..."
4. Florida Georgia Line - This Is How We Roll
Why it's trending: Ever since fellow country boy Luke Bryan announced a live tour, and it all sold out within minutes, we think people have been looking up his music to get excited. We know that "This Is How We Roll" is a FGL song, but with a feature by Bryan, maybe that's why these lyrics are trending...
Best lyric line: "This is how we roll / We hanging round singing out everything on the radio / We light it up with our hands up..."
3. American Authors - Trouble
Why it's trending: The band that gave you "Best Day Of My Life" is back with a new single, "Trouble", and it's kind of like the male version of Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble". We have a feeling these dudes are gonna be big in 2014, especially with the release of Oh, What A Life, their first album due out March 4th.
Best lyric line: "I knew she was trouble from the first kiss / I could tell that something wasn't right with you ..."
2. Bleachers - I Wanna Get Better
Why it's trending: Fun.'s Jack Antonoff has just came out with Bleachers, his musical side project, and the first single from the project is a promising one. "I Wanna Get Better" is an anthem about dealing with intense feelings trapped inside your own body, and it's being speculated that Antonoff wrote this song about the passing of his younger sister when she was just 13. It's a powerful alt-rock track that makes us want to hear more.
Best lyric line: "I didn't know I was broken / Til I wanted to change / I wanna get better..."
1. Shakira - Empire
Why it's trending: Oh, Shakira, you're so awesome! Known for her own unique brand of Latin pop, her second single from her upcoming self-titled LP is kind of nonsensical but also whimsical. "Empire"'s chorus may not make that much sense, but it's Shakira, and we love her unconditionally.
Best lyric line: "Like the empire of the world unite / We are alive / And the stars make love to the universe / You're my wild fire every single night..."
