Whenever a song creeps its way into our Top 100 chart, we always assume it's from a popular artist. But sometimes, y'all love tunes by up-and-coming acts and The Lumineers are no exception. Currently sitting at no. 50 on our chart, this folk-rock trio and their sweet, simple lyrics to "Ho Hey" are slowly but surely becoming everybody's favorite song, so we decided to deCODE the tune for one and all:
(Ho) I've been trying to do it right (Hey)
I've been living a lonely life
(Ho) I've been sleeping here instead (Hey)
I've been sleeping in my bed
(Ho) Sleeping in my bed (Hey)
The song starts off with the narrator explaining how he's trying to move on after a big breakup. How do we know he's describing his life post-relationship? The line "I've been sleeping here instead / I've been sleeping in my bed" suggests that he used to be with his lover and now he's all alone.
(Ho) So show me family (Hey)
All the blood that I would bleed
(Ho) I don't know where I belong (Hey)
I don't know where I went wrong
(Ho) But I can write a song (Hey)
To pick himself up again, he thinks about the positive things like family and simply being alive. He doesn't know what he did wrong in the relationship, but proves that he still loves his ex by writing a song for her:
(2, 3) I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweet
This short but special chorus is just what the narrator needs to say to his once-girlfriend. He belongs with her and she belongs with him! End of story.
(Ho) I don't think your right for him (Hey)
Look at might have been if you'd
(Ho) Took a bus to Chinatown (Hey)
I'd be standing on Canal
(Ho) And Bowery (Hey)
(Ho) She'd be standing next to me (Hey)
This verse explains what could have happened if his ex-love made a different choice in life. Now that she's with a new guy, she missed an opportunity to find the narrator. If she'd just taken that one bus instead of running off to her new b/f, she'd find her true love again!
Love, we need it now
Let's hope for some
So we're bleeding now
The narrator still has hope that his girl will come back to him. He believes in the power of love, and know that's all he needs to win back his soulmate.
