The MetroLyrics Year-End Awards: Vote For The Most Pop-Culturally Relevant Lyric Of 2012

It's Day 3 of the MetroLyrics Year-End Awards, where YOU get to vote and crown one artist the winner of their category! It's time to look back on the year and crown one artist and song The Most Pop-Culturally Relevant Lyric of 2012! What does that mean, exactly? It's the song that was covered a million times over, the song that spawned many copies, and one that practically everyone you talked to knew about. Scroll down to check the nominees & vote in the poll...

PSY - Gangnam Style

"Hey Sexy lady / Op op op op oppan Gangnam Style"

"Gangnam Style" is the unlikely K-pop song that took the world by STORM. Soon it became the most-watched video of ALL TIME on Youtube. The sheer speed with which this track spread across the globe was astounding and even more astounding was how many people embraced it as a fun, hilarious meme, even if they couldn't understand the lyrics.

Bonus Material: When this Korean track first came out, we got ahold of the English translation, and explained the meaning behind the words!

Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe

"Hey I just met you / And this is crazy / But here's my number / So call me maybe"

Did you know that if you search "Call Me Maybe cover" on Youtube, you get over 167 000 results? It's true, and it's not that surprising considering this song rose to fame after Justin Bieber covered it on his private jet with Selena Gomez and a few of their friends, thus kicking off the frenzy of funny covers from classical musicians to Cookie Monster, to pop stars like Katy Perry! Have you covered it yet?

Bonus Material: Earlier in the year, we sat down for an exclusive interview with Carly Rae Jepsen to ask her about getting signed, meeting Justin Bieber, and her musical influences.

Rihanna - Diamonds

"So shine bright, tonight, You and I / We're beautiful like diamonds in the sky"

This first single from Rihanna's 7th album Unapologetic landed the edgy popstar her 12th hit on the the Billboard Hot 100, tying her with Madonna and The Supremes — that's a pretty big deal! The song was a welcome departure from Rihanna's usual club-banger musical style and when it came out, everyone loved it. Jimmy Fallon and Rashida Jones covered it Christmas-style on Jimmy's show and we found it hard to get the line "Shine bright like a Diamond" out of our heads.

Bonus Material: Watch Sia perform a stunning rendition of "Diamonds" which was actually written by her for Rihanna.

Fun. - Some Nights

"Well, some nights I wish that this all would end / 'Cause I could use some friends for a change"

Fun. burst on to the music scene in 2011 with their song "We Are Young", but we think that when it comes to their role in pop culture, "Some Nights" was a tune that really hit home for music fans. Featured on Glee and covered multiple times by a capella groups, the song is heartfelt, catchy, and goosebump-inducing. With the official music video at over 42 million views on YouTube, we think people will resonate with the song's down-on-its-luck lyrics for years to come.

Bonus Material: The members of Fun. talked to our friends over at KROQ back in March 2012 to discuss their up-and-coming popularity...

Justin Bieber - Boyfriend

"If I was your boyfriend, never let you go / Keep you on my arm girl, you'd never be alone"

In the last year, have any boys said "swaggy" to you, or invited you to eat fondue by the fire with them? If so, you have Justin Bieber and his song "Boyfriend" to thank for that. This was the first single from his latest album Believe and it was the first time Bieber entered his not-a-boy-not-yet-a-man grownup phase. After this song, the term "swag" entered our everyday vocabulary, for better or for worse.

Bonus Material: When the "Boyfriend" video first came out, it looked a liiiiittle familiar. See our comparison of "Boyfriend" and N*SYNC's eerily similar video for their hit "Girlfriend" featuring Nelly.
