MetroLyrics Guide To Vegetables

In case you didn't hear, yesterday, Monday, June 17th, was Vegetable Awareness Day. So we've gotta ask: are you getting your recommended 6-8 servings of fruits and vegetables each day? If not, we're here to help. Here are some tips, found in some of pop's biggest lyrics, to help ensure you get your daily intake of greens.

Tip #1: Carrots are everybody's favorite veggie, so bring enough to share!

"Now even now they eating out / The palm of my hand / There's only one carrot / And they all gotta share it" — Bruno Mars, "Runaway Baby"

Even if you're not huge into veggies, carrots can make for a great go-to snack. But bring enough of this fan favorite to share with the whole group or you'll be left empty handed.

Tip #2: Keep an eye on your broccoli

"They know I got that broccoli, so I keep that glock with me / Don't get caught without one, comin' from where I'm from" — Young Jeezy ft. Kanye West, "Put On"

Take it from Young Jeezy — you can't be too overprotective when it comes to your broccoli. This particular veggie comes chalk full of Vitamin C and dietary fiber, not to mention a number of anti-cancer nutrients. Get it if you know what's good.

Tip #3: Spinach does the body good

"Ten spoons of spinach / The soul and the spillage / The cup that runneth over / Return of the 'O God'" — Gorillaz, "All Alone"

If you're wondering about portion control when it comes to this green leafy veggie, a good ten spoonfuls is perfect. Thanks, Gorillaz!

Tip #4: Track down that lettuce

"Never fuss or fight, on the grind tryna find this lettuce" — J. Cole ft. Trey Songz, "Can't Get Enough"

One of the easiest vegetable pairings is, well, lettuce with anything! Since it's essentially tasteless, jazz it up with whatever you like. It's worth hunting for. Just ask J. Cole.

Tip #5: Pick your own peppers

"Peter Piper picked peppers but Tab rocked rhymes / 1,2,3,4, several times" — Sergio Mendes ft. Black Eyed Peas, "Mas Que Nada"

You don't have to be Peter Piper to tend to a garden. What's more satisfying than getting the freshest veggies imaginable? Get out there, pick your own, and reap the reward.
