The Worst Songs of the 70s? We Disagree...

Recently, Rolling Stone counted down the Top 10 Worst Songs of the 70's. While we admit that no, in the 1970's we weren't born yet, we do maintain that we are huge fans of 70's music from acid rock to disco. Since our parents grew up in that decade, we were exposed from a young age to Elton John, ABBA, The Bee Gees, and Fleetwood Mac among others. Here are 3 songs on the "Worst" list we definitely disagree with — I mean, they're amazing!

1. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain / And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne / If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape / You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape"

This ol-skool jam seems to solely be known as the "Pina Colada" song, but if you listen to the lyrics, Rupert Holmes has actually whipped up a clever story. His relationship isn't exciting anymore, so he places a personal ad that his own girlfriend ends up answering in the end! They have a laugh about it and keep going strong in their courtship. An interesting lyrical tale, don't you think?

2. You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone

"You light up my life / You give me hope to carry on / You light up my days / and fill my nights with song"

You Light Up My Life is one of the songs my mom sang to me as a baby. The lyrics are simple but oh-so meaningful and convey love in the best way. Plus, Ms. Debby Boone's voice is smooth and sweet so this is easy-listening at its finest.

3. Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band

"Sky rocket's in flight, afternoon delight / Afternoon delight, afternoon delight"

Anyone from our generation would recognize this tune from the comedy movie Anchorman when the cast members sing a perfectly harmonized rendition on their break at the office. If this song didn't exist, then that scene wouldn't make us laugh over and over, which is why we think it's one of the BEST songs of the 70's, not the worst.
