Hello, all! Welcome back to our latest feature, Trending Tuesday, where we count down from 10 to 1 the best new songs on our radar this week. 2014 is already gearing up to be an excellent year for music, with one of the years' best albums already out thanks to punk rock band Against Me!, as well as Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn going solo with a new track. So join us in the countdown and get your Spotify players ready:
10. Real Estate - Talking Backwards
Why it's trending: Indie rockers Real Estate have been making feel-good music since 2009, and with their third album Atlas due out sometime this year, the record's first single "Talking Backwards" is the perfect kick off of our Trending Tuesday list. Press play and instantly get into a sunny mood, despite the frustrating lyrics.
Best lyric line: "And I might as well be talking backwards / Am I making any sense to you? / And they only thing that really matters / Is the one thing that I can't seem to do..."
9. Mogwai - Remurdered
Why it's trending: Post-rockers Mogwai just dropped their eighth studio album, Rave Tapes, and it's already one of our favorites of the year. The first single, "Remurdered", is an almost prog-rock / electronic mish-mash of brewing synth hits and guitar licks, all the while maintaining their signature dark sound.
8. MAGIC! - Rude
Why it's trending: Canadian reggae-tinged band MAGIC!'s debut single "Rude" is one of the year's strongest, blowing up on everybody's playlist and reminding us of sunshine-y days despite the freezing temperatures outside.
Best lyric line: "Why you gotta be so rude? / Don't you know I'm human too..."
7. Magic Giant - Glass Heart
Why it's trending: When you work in the music business, cool music often finds you through your inbox. Austin Bis, a member of the new band Magic Giant, sent us the group's debut song "Glass Heart" to check out and we instantly took a liking to the catchy tune. But not only is "Glass Heart" a catchy tune, it's also being used to spread good-will. For every 5000 Soundcloud streams of the song, a member of Magic Giant will give an hour music lesson to a Green Dot Public School student in LA. So listen to "Glass Heart" above and do your part to provide a free music lesson to a deserving child in the process.
Best lyric line: "Your glass heart's been in a sharp place / Walking on tight-ropes, dancing on razor blades / I see through those dark days / Let me hold your glass heart"
6. Tiesto - Red Lights
Why it's trending: Tiesto goes pop! The legendary techno producer has released one of his catchiest songs yet, and it'll be featured on the DJ's upcoming sixth studio album (that's still untitled). We can't stop blasting this catchy jam!
Best lyric line: "Nobody else needs to know / Where we might go / We could just run them red lights..."
5. Rick Ross - The Devil Is A Lie ft. Jay Z
Why it's trending: Coming off his buzzworthy upcoming album Mastermind, Rick Ross enlisted the help of fellow rap mogul Jay Z for his soul-tinged single "The Devil Is A Lie". If this single is anything like the songs that will be included off Mastermind, we can't WAIT to hear it.
Best lyric line: "F*** the game raw when I came in it / Getting money ever since I came in it / You couldn't stop me if you tried / Motherf****r cause the devil is a lie..."
4. Jennifer Nettles - That Girl
Why it's trending: Sugarland frontwoman Jennifer Nettles just released her debut solo album of the same name, and it's gearing up to be one of the best country-pop albums of the year. In the single, she claims that she doesn't want to be the other woman, sensing a presence on the man she's falling for.
Best lyric line: "I don't want to be that girl / With your guy / To fool you / Make you cry / Wreck it all / For one night..."
3. Beck - Blue Moon
Why it's trending: With a new album (albums?) due out this year, starting with Morning Phase in February, our fave musical shape-shifter Beck is putting his best electronica spin on folk with "Blue Moon", with stunning lyrics about the desire to not be alone.
Best lyric line: "I'm so tired of being alone / These penitent walls are all I've known / Songbird calling across the water / Inside my silent asylum..."
2. Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots
Why it's trending: Gorillaz and Blur frontman Damon Albarn is back with a solo single, "Everyday Robots", and he's calling out society's bluffs in his lyrics. Set to a looped violin hook, Albarn sings about the rat race and how we are consistently glued to our smartphones. Oops.
Best lyric line: "We are everyday robots on our phones, in the process of getting home / Looking like standing stones, out there on our own..."
1. Against Me! - Black Me Out
Why it's trending: Known already for their heavy-hitting lyrics, Against Me! have gotten even more deep and political with their sixth studio album Transgender Dysphoria Blues. Lead singer Laura Jane Grace opens up about her life as a transgender and transition from male to female. In addition to its deeply personal lyrics, the album is chalk full of catchy punk-rock hooks, which is why we've had it on repeat all week.
Best lyric line: "'I want to chop those brass rings off / Your fat f***ing fingers / As if you were a king-maker..."
