Nickelback, had their first few performances as a cover band. The members, however, wanted to sing their own songs, so Chad Kroeger, the band’s guitarist and vocalist, composed their songs, then, borrowed money from his stepfather to be able to travel to Vancouver and record in a studio. Due to a successful recording, the rest of the members: Mike Kroeger, also a guitarist, Ryan Vikedal, the bassist, moved to the city in 1996.

Within the year of the group’s relocation to Vancouver, they launched the EP Hesher and “Curb” independently and went on various tours. Chad, who previously had experience in selling ads for a magazine, had the great idea of asking favors from his friends that they call up the radio stations and request for their band’s single to be played until they expand their fan base. The strategy was, of course, successful.

Two years passed, and Nickelback decided that it was time to manage themselves. Mike was in charge of the distribution, Chad was assigned to radio tracking, and Ryan was responsible for bookings. The band also had to invest around $30,000 for their new album which was entitled: “The State” and released in the first quarter of 2000. “Leader of Men”, which was one of the singles of Nickelback, was well-received, especially because people during that time were in search of “homegrown music”. This resulted to Nickelback’s fame, placing them at the same level as 3 Doors Down, Creed, etc, where the group performed in front of millions of fans. “The State” also had impressive sales, with around 500,000 copies sold, not only in Canada, but also in the US.
Nickelback’s next album was called: “Silver Side Up” and was their most popular album. The hits found in the said album were written even before the release of “The State”. Nickelback even tested those compositions during their cross-country tours. Most of the compositions in “Silver Side Up” also had lyrical content which were more direct as compared to the metaphors used in Nickelback’s first few records. “Never Again” is about broken families; "Too Bad" speaks of an absent father, etc.

Nickelback, Rick Parashar, famous producer of Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam, and Randy Staub of Metallica and U2, who was responsible for mixing the tracks, collaborated in “Silver Side Up”. “How You Remind Me”, the first single of the album, became a smash hit, holding the 1st spot in both the rock charts of the US and Canada, making Nickelback the second Canadian band to hold the number one spot in both charts.
