Octavarium Lyrics

Dream Theater

I never wanted to become someone like him, so secure Content to live each day just like the last I was sure, I knew that this was not for me And I wanted so much more, far beyond what I could see So, I swore that I'd never be someone like him
So many years have passed since I proclaimed My independence, my mission, my aim and my vision, so secure Content to live each day like it's my last [ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/octavarium-lyrics-dream-theater.html ] It's wonderful to know that I could be something more than I dreamed Far beyond what I could see, still I swear that I'm missing out this time
As far as I could tell, there's nothing more I need But still I ask myself, could this be everything? Then all I swore that I would never be was now So, suddenly, the only thing I wanted to become To be someone just like him

This is one of my favorite DT songs, but I always struggled to figure out what an "octavarium" is. The only thing I can figure is that the average human life span is roughly 80 years. A person in their eighties is called an "octavarian." If you change "ian" to "ium", you get either a shape with 80 sides (which is ridiculous), or you can use your imagination and think of a person's lifespan on this earth as an "octavarium", an enclosure spanning more or less 80 years. And the cycle repeats over and over. As Labrie sings, "We move in circles/ Balanced all the while/ On a gleaming razor's edge." And further on, "The story ends where it began." Thus, one interpretation of the song is that it's a statement about the futility of human action. No matter what we do, we're going to die and other people will take our place, ad infinitum.

The lyrics are incomplete. This is just the Part I (Someone Like Him). There's missing other four parts.
