How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side
I don't, I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat, it's all I ever
I heard your voice through a photograph
I thought it up, it brought up the past
Once you know you can never go back
I've got to take it on the otherside
Centuries are what it meant to me
A cemetery where I marry the sea
Stranger things could never change my mind
I've got to take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on, take it on
How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side
I don't, I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat, it's all I ever
Pour my life into a paper cup
The ashtray's full and I'm spillin' my guts
She wants to know am I still a slut
I've got to take it on the otherside
Scarlet starlet and she's in my bed
A candidate for my soul mate bled
Push the trigger and pull the thread
I've got to take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on, take it on
How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side
I don't, I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat, it's all I ever
Turn me on, take me for a hard ride
Burn me out, leave me on the otherside
I yell and tell it that it's not my friend
I tear it down, I tear it down
And then it's born again
How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side
I don't, I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat, it's all I ever
How long? I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat, it's all I ever

This song is about a tough battle against drugs. "pour my life into a paper cup" he's most likely pouring alcohol into a paper cup and he's saying alcohol is his life; drugs and alcohol usually go together and he sings next "ashtray's full and I'm spilling my guts" self-explanatory..I think it also shows how deep his addiction has gone that he's experiencing its bad effects.. in the chorus which repeats this line a lot "I don't believe it's bad"..perhaps he's at the point of losing his conscience or an understanding of what's wrong or right for him. 'slit my throat, it's all I ever' could explain why he doesn't believe it's bad..because he would rather die or metaphorically 'die' without this addiction, he needs it to 'live'..in the former, it could mean that he might be losing this battle and he's about to give up ..2nd and 6th verse tells of unforgettable incidents in his life which involves him and a person/ people from his past..'i heard your voice from a photograph..it brought up the past' i think he's talking about rhcp's first guitarist who died because drugs. he misses his friend that's why he's looking at his photo. 'once you know, you can never go back' anthony knows what drugs can lead to, so he can never go back the same road that his friend has gone. but maybe he can't face the reality that his lost his friend so 'i gotta take on the otherside'.. 'turn me on, take me on for a hard ride' drugs bring him higher 'i yell and tell he's not my friend, i tear it down but it's born again' again he can't decide what's good for him..he knows it's bad but he can't stop. almost like feeding his 'animal' side. love, chocxxy

Coversation is wrong, this song is about Hillel Slovak, the original guitarist for the Chili Peppers, who died of an overdose.

can i ask whats the meaning of the song?
Coversation
This song is about Anthony's addictions and his attempts to get clean. From the song: Turn me on take me for a hard ride Burn me out leave me on the other side I yell and tell it that it's not a friend I tear it down, I tear it down and then it's born again. This tells about how he tried to kick ****s but was (at the time Californication was being recorded) unable to.
