Outkast Biography

OutKast is a hip-hop duo who originated from East Point city in Georgia. The members of OutKast are Antwan Patton “Big Boi” (birth date February 1, 1975) and Andre Benjamin “Andre 3000” (birth date May 27, 1975). They were known at first as The OKB or The OutKast Brothers, but had their stage name shortened into “OutKast”. Andre 3000 and Big Boi are considered highly successful, especially because of the fact that the duo received a total of six Grammy Awards. OutKast also boasts of making original content and being experimental in the way they create their music.
Patton and Benjamin met each other in Tri-Cities High School, which they both attended. The school’s specialty was the performing arts as well as visual arts. Patton and Benjamin then became a team and Organized Noise, a production team known for making TLC’s hits took interest.

In 1992, OutKast was given a recording contract by the LaFace label and was considered as the company’s first hip-hop performers. The duo was introduced in TLC’s remix of “What About Your Friends”. The year after, OutKast launched their debut single entitled “Player’s Ball’ which was loved by a lot of people, thus, the said single reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot Rap Tracks chart.

In 1994, OutKast’s debut album was introduced to the public and was called “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik”. The album was the start of the southern hip hop genre so it is considered very valuable by hip-hop lovers. One year later, OutKast was awarded “Best New Rap Group” at the 1995 Source Awards. In August of 1996, OutKast released their follow-up album: “ATLiens”. It paved the way for OutKast’s greater fame in the East and West Coast. Two years after, OutKast launched “Aquemini”, their third album which hit the 2nd spot in the US Billboard 200 Album chart and received high praise form fans and critics alike.

In 2000, the duo’s fourth album called "Stankonia" was launched. It became number two on the US Billboard 200 chart just like OutKast’s previous album “Aquemini”. The album contained singles such as "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)" with some jungle-inspired compositions, "Ms. Jackson," which speaks about breakups, to be spefic, Andre’s split with Erykah Badu, also a singer. “Ms. Jackson” became OutKast’s first hit from the pop genre, topping Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The following year, OutKast received the “Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group” for their single “Ms. Jackson” at the 2001 Grammy Awards, as well as the “Best Rap Album” award for “Stankonia”.

In 2003, the duo released their most successful album to date: “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”, which are actually two solo albums, one for Andre 3000 and one for Big Boi. “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” stayed on top of the Billboard 200 Albums chart for a number of weeks. It was certified diamond since it garnered a total of 10,000,000 sales in the latter part of 2004. Two of its most successful singles include: Andre 3000’s single “Hey Ya!” and Big Boi’s single “The Way You Move”.

Andre 3000 and Big Boi are now working on solo albums, but still remain intact as OutKast. It was announced just last November (2008) that the duo will be releasing a new album within the year (2009) together with their solo albums.
