Pearl Jam Biography

One of the most well-known grunge bands in the ‘90s is Pearl Jam. Added fact: Some of the Pearl Jam members have recorded previously under the name Temple of the Dog (1990) and Mother Love Bone (1988). Currently, the following are the members of the said band: Jeff Ament on Bass Guitar, Stone Gossard and Mike McCready on guitars, Eddie Vedder on vocals and guitar, and Matt Cameron on drums.

The success of the album named “Temple of the Dog” gave way to the formation of Pearl Jam. Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard were the first two members. They decided to recruit Mike McCready as their guitarist and proceeded to record a demo tape composed of 3 songs. The tape reached Eddie Vedder through Jack Irons, an ex-drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Vedder liked what he heard so he decided to add his vocals and mail the demo tape back to the ‘almost formed’ group, and the rest was history. Completing the band was Dave Krusen as the drummer. The group then decided to name themselves “Pearl Jam,” which was an inspiration from Vedder’s aunt named “Pearl” and the special peyote jam she made.
Pearl Jam’s first album consisted of eleven so
ngs and was given the title of: “Ten.” The whole album, as most people noticed, had death as well as serial killers as the main themes. An example is one of the songs in the album: “Jeremy,” which was about a boy committing suicide in front of his classmates and was actually a true story. “Footsteps” is another Pearl Jam composition inspired by a boy who turned out to be a serial killer---with these songs, the group was able to express their concern about what is happening in society, thus, increasing their album sales.

The first three albums released by Pearl Jam were huge and gained them a lot of loving fans. The band, however, lost many of their supporters when they were involved in the so called “Ticketmaster monopoly” and lost in the lawsuit field against them. Pearl Jam continued making music, but weren’t able to get as much sales if compared to their first three albums and in the year 2003, decided to leave Epic Records (their record company for over ten years). The band has definitely created very original pieces and has been seen appearing in a number of TV shows, including David Letterman’s.
