Plies Biography
Algernod Lanier Washington, more popularly known as Plies, is a US-based rapper born in July 1st 1976. He originated from Florida, raised in East Dunbar. In the latter part of the 90s, Plies created an independent label called “Big Gates Records” together with his brother. At first, Plies didn’t want to rap or perform, but after he demonstrated rapping for one of their artists, his brother decided to utilize Plies’ rapping for the song: “"Tell Dem Krackers Dat". The brothers then traveled to Miami a number of times in order to promote the track, successfully resulting to a deal with Slip-N-Side Records.
In 2006, Plies was involved in a shooting. This led to Plies being charged with illegal possession of weapons, while the other people he was with were accused with attempted murder. The incident actually began after Plies' microphone was disconnected to give way to another performer since Plies’ act was overextended. This made Plies furious, thus, the fighting and shouting began, resulting to gun fire.
In 2007, Plies’ debut album “The Real Testament” was released. His lead single: “Shawty” featured T-Pain and became a chart topper on Billboard’s Hot Rap Tracks, while being number nine on Billboard’s Hot 100. The second single in his album: “Hypnotized” became number three on the Rap Chart and was number 14 on the Hot 100 chart. “The Real Testament” was certified Gold in February of last year ’08. “Hypnotized” and “Shawty” were also certified gold singles.
Ten months after launching his debut album, Plies introduced his sophomore album entitled: “Definition of Real”, released in June of the same year. The first single "Bust It Baby Pt. 2" which featured Ne-yo and hit the 2nd spot at the Hot Rap Tracks as well as the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles charts, while holding the 7th spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. “Definition of Real” held 2nd place at the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 200,000 copies just on the first 7 days it was introduced to the public.
Plies’ third album called “Da REAList” was launched in December, still of the same year with “Put It on Ya” as the lead single. “Da REAList” held the 14th spot on the Billboard 200. In the same month, Plies also rapped on “Nasty Girl” one of Ludacris’ s single included in the album “Theater of the Mind”. Plies, currently, has finished making his fourth album which he plans to release this coming May (2009). The exact date, according to Plies, will be determined based on the success rate of his album “Da REAList”. Plies has had a number of nominations in 2008 including: Best Collaboration and People’s Champ Award in the BET Hip-Hop Awards, Best Rap Album and Best Club Banger of the Year in the Ozone Awards, and many more.
