It's okay for them to make/take/distribute legal nasty lil' pills that cause you take more and more nasty lil' pills...and on and on. They take natural things make them totally synthetic and deadly, Some made from the same ingredients as "HEROIN"...****O, yes...@#$%ing hypocrits. But continue to point the finger, shame on you "Pot-heads".....

HoboBobulus

The song seems to be both about pot and heroin, in that the average **** user will do pot and then be punished for it, while the politicians and high standing officials that punished these people are into more costly, "upscale" ****s like heroin. Hence the line "Ganja? Please", as if saying that the pot average users do is nothing in comparison. Also, I think that the lines about indigo are referring to it philosophically, where indigo is the spiritual color of aura and intuition. So by weeping indigo away while their eyeballs are deep in the muddy waters of heroin, officials show a lack of sound intuition and judgment. So of course, they are all pots calling the kettle black.

squattingbull, if you're talking about the video with the snails... that's not the official video, someone else made it. And because one vague line in the song claims, "'that the law might as well get them all while theyre at it because they prolly smoke marijuana just as much as they do,'" doesn't mean its weed, one could also say the same about any substance. But the other lyrics point more toward Heroin.

the name of this song got its name from and english idiom the pot calling the kettle black, which means when you point to another person and accuse that person of doing something that you are guilty of doing yourself. the songs meaning is about heroin as eyeballs in muddy water refers to heroin no.3 which turns brown when boiled. and i'm guessing he sings about people with power get caught they pay there way out and thats ok? which is liar lawyer mirror show me whats the difference kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent, kangaroo as in kangaroo courts where if you do something wrong you pay a fine and it sweet. and then the government says herion is bad but they let them pay here way out as in who are you to wave your finger your so full of it. and thats all i got fell free to correct me if you think i'm wrong Smiley

I always thought it was like this... "Well your refer says you're chosen in a pool...better get all dressed up in your high eye. When ya piss all over my black halo, ya musta been high, high."

Jacob94

this song is about heroine and the hypocrisy that surrounds it. when heroine is wet it looks like muddy water hence the 'eyeballs deep in muddy waters'. and the who are you to wave your finger is about the people that claim that heroine is bade yet these people are stoned out of theyre minds on pain killers and morpheine which are made of the same chemicals.

I really believe that this song is about the criminalization of marijuana in America. In the chorus 'you must have been high' is an ironic insight to when it was outlawed in 1937. The government must have been high when they made that decision. And the name of the song 'the pot' refers to the saying 'the pot calling the kettle black', which is also ironic since marijuana is nicknamed 'pot'. I think he (Maynard) titled the song this to give a hint of the subject matter, and to suggest that hypocrites banned 'pot' when there are so many other substances that kill people everyday and are legal. The line 'eyeballs deep in muddy waters' is about the stigma that is associated with marijuana based on years of government propaganda and false facts given to the public. I know that fans who don't care about this issue are rolling their eyes but it is an important issue. So many good people have served many years in prison for a stupid, hypocritical law. Tobacco and alcohol will kill more people this year than pot has ever in it's 10,000 years of use. But the great thing about Tool songs (and any song really) is that you can have your own interpetation based on what the lyrics mean to you. So for those who say it's only about hypocrisy in our judicial system or government then I think that's fine. But I feel the song digs a little deeper than that.

i feel that tool uses these lyrics as a metaphor for the governments corruption, as well as certain people in high ranking authority, whether it be from a judicial standpoint or a legislative standpoint, like is mentioned earlier COZENED is key in representing this song's true meaning, and this song could also be referring to the people of our so called "in generation" who like many of us try and focus on all these politicians, they truly understand the psyche of the modern person

Great job on the lyrics, Just have a thought. I'm probably wrong but here it is. the lyric "Liar, lawyer, mirror, show me. What's the difference?" I like to believe he says "While I'll hold your mirror, show me, what's the difference". The lyrics above make sense, but I always took a liking to this "alternative" Smiley any takers?
