Robert's got a quick hand.
He'll look around the room,
he wont tell you his plan.
He's got a rolled cigarette
hanging out his mouth.
He's a cowboy kid.
Yeah! He found a six-shooter gun
in his dad's closet, with the box of fun things.
I don't even know what,
but he's coming for you. Yeah, He's coming for you!
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.
Daddy works a long day.
He be coming home late, and he's coming home late.
And he's bringing me a surprise.
'cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice
I've waited for a long time.
Yeah the sleight of my hand is now a quick-pull trigger.
I reason with my cigarette,
Then say, "Your hair's on fire, you must have lost your wits, yeah?"
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,

I liked the song until I googled the lyrics. It really has a catchy beat, but now that I know what it's about, I refuse to listen to it. I can't think of any positive purpose in this song. Maybe I'm just getting too old.

The writers probably made it a debatable subject so that people would talk about it. No matter what your other opinions, I'm shure none of you like little kids shooting, and now your talking about it, even arguing because there are so many different possibilities that everyone has their own interpretations.

I think he has conflicting emotions. He obviously has personal and or mental problems, and changes from firs to second perspective. "Robert" is a cowboy kid, but there's also the little boy. Also, "better run" is a warning. Hes not shure he wants to, even if Robert is.

This is a really really good song. It poissibly will go down as the two thousand and teens "I don't like Mondays" (Boomtown Rats 1980s). It's very smart. I tried to explain it to my nine year old who of course doesn't like it, the subterfuge, what lies beneath, what we don't see at school that goes on at home, behind the scenes, away from others.
All the other kids with their pumped up kicks - Jealous? Patronising? Angry? Are these kids happy and from happy families, all good, rich parents, not bullied at home, get what they want or when they want it? Robert doesn't. Robert hurts. The others don't notice this in their fine shoes (or wow, just cool kicks) and happy family ignorance.
Daddy works a long day - Daddy, what we who LOVE our dads call them, our daddies, YAY, daddy's coming home after a hard day's work - again, pretty patronising, the old bastard is on his way, i didn't get the food outta the freezer, he's going kick my #!@%*# HARD. But now i've found something in his closet. U gonna give ME a surprise pa? I got one for you #!@%*#. Then i'm gonna go out and maybe give all them kicks with their cute family lives and real home cooked meals and pretty little sisters and brothers and maybe nice homes and A grades and decent shoes and clothes, the same surprise......I'm 51 and i think this song is brilliant. It should be some sort of set thingy for students of psychology, it's really very basic but the tune and rythm give it the "up beat" and "non threatening" feel that makes it....

I'm 20 that's how I interpreted it, it's just a fact that's the most likely scenario for a kid in Robert's shoes.

its about a disturbed kid going on a killing spree named Robert Hawkins (no #!@%*#).
1st verse: he is just about to start shooting, and is hanging around with a shifty look and a revolver and no one suspects a thing. and the cowboy stuff means he's having fun with the idea of how cool it will be (probably to hae that power). cowboys are also lone figures which is important. but the line "and i dont even know what" any ideas?
Chorus: pumped up kicks are probably like Nike airs and stuff, which probably means all the trendy popular kids, and hes going to shoot them. by telling them to run (even if not literaly) he is playing with them and enjoying this, because you cant run faster than bullets.
second verse: it says "daddy works a long day" which i think has an ironic innocense in assuming hes working that whole time. i think whats actually happening when dad's coming home late and bringing a surprise is he's coming home late drunk and beating him. dinner on ice is neglection. dinner reference + "ive been waiting a long time" suggests that he is at the dinnertable waiting for his dad to walk in. on top of that i think it also means he has been waiting along time for the opportunity of revenge. now reasoning with the cigarette is entertaining himself while he waits. the cigarette is probably acting as his concience he personifies it but also dismisses its opinion "And say your hair's on fire, you must have lost your wits"
And to that ENC person Im much more offended at you telling people to pray and thank god then I would ever be at a song. BTW it was a shooting at westroads mall omaha

the part dinner on ice could also mean his fathers dinner is an ice cold beer or something to that effect
the i dont know what part i think is a reference to life i dont know what life is type of thing. bluntly put before some on reaches the stage of considering murder (unless sick) a person goes through a lot of confusion on why bad things happen to them
