"I thought up the name Queen. It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid, It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one facet of it. ”—Freddie Mercury

In 1969 guitarist Brian May and bassist Tim Staffell posted an advertisement at his school London's Imperial College for a drummer and eventually a young dental student auditioned and got the job. They group was called Smile. Smile was signed to Mercury Records in 1969, and they had a few member changes and eventually renamed the band Queen. Their first album (self titled) was positively reviewed by critics.

Bohemian Rapsody
Probably their biggest single Bohemian Rhapsody was number 1 in the UK for nine weeks, and is Britain's third best single of all times. This song has been voted many times as the greatest song of all times. The band also recorded a music video to go with the single, and it is considered to be the first 'true' music video ever made. Other bands had made videos but those were made for tv shows rather than a video was free of charge for any network to put it on.
