Rihanna shelled out more than US$50,000 to fly her mum and gran to an awards ceremony in New York.

The Umbrella singer wanted the pair by her side as she picked up the Woman of the Year award at the Glamour magazine bash earlier this week.

And she also paid to have her brothers and aunts jet in from her native Barbados.

Rihanna, 21, choked back tears as she accepted her gong on Monday night, saying: "I really look up to my gran and my mom. They are my two women of the year.

"Without their unconditional love and guidance, I wouldn't be here."

Afterwards, Rihanna introduced the two women to Iman, Serena Williams, Tyra Banks and fashion designer Stella .....

Brave Rihanna insists that her decision to open up about her attack at the hands of ex-love Chris Brown is 'actually helping save lives'.

The singer told TV host Alexa Chung that a motivation for deciding to finally talk about the abuse nightmare was to try to finally put it behind her.

But the star - who came out onstage throwing a punch - proudly insisted that it also had a profoundly positive influence on helping other young women who were victims of domestic abuse.

Rihanna admitted that she watched her father beat her mother as she was growing up - and vowed never to date an abusive man.

The 21-year-old singer told ABC: "I'd be beating on my dad's leg all the time trying to stand in the middle, breaking glass bottles so they could hear something else and snap out of it. My mum never went to hospital but he broke her nose one time. I always said to myself, 'I'm never gonna date someone like my dad, never'."

Chris Brown had "no soul in his eyes" when he attacked then-girlfriend, Rihanna, she revealed.

The Umbrella star said Brown appeared inhuman during the vicious assault.

As she described the horror she felt as the R'n'B singer punched and bit her, she said: "There was no person when I looked at him. It wasn't the same person that says I love you. It was not those eyes. He had no soul in his eyes. Just blank. He was clearly blacked out."

Brown was arrested on February 8. He later pleaded guilty to felony assault charges.

Rihanna welled up as she told of her "embarrassment" at falling for a man who beat her.

In her first TV interview about Chris Brown's attack, the Umbrella star spoke of her irrational feelings of shame that she was "so far in love" with an abuser.

And she admitted that her love for Brown was "so unconditional" she went back to him, only now admitting she was "lying" to herself in the hope it would delete the horrific memory of the beating.

Rihanna has spoken for the first time about being attacked by Chris Brown, admitting: "He was definitely my first big love."

The Umbrella star, giving her first interview about the attack, says her powerful feelings for Brown made the attack all the more traumatic to deal with.

And she also spoke about how the worldwide attention over the attack changed her life.

"I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears," the 21-year-old beauty said.

"That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day. It was like, 'What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can't go back home?"

An extreme wrestler has laid into pop princess Rihanna, alleging she lifted ideas from his album cover for her new release.

Earlier, Rihanna's jaw-dropping barbed wire outfit appeared on the cover of Russian Roulette, her first new single since she was assaulted by ex-flame Chris Brown in February.

Superstar Rihanna released Russian Roulette, a new single that premiered on her website overnight.

The release is the first since February, when Rihanna was assaulted by Chris Brown, her ex-boyfriend, on the night before the Grammy Awards.

Brown has since been convicted of assault and ordered to serve out probation, heavy duty community service and undergo domestic violence counselling. He is subject to a restraining order to stay away from Rihanna.

A friend said: "Rihanna doesn't want to be pegged a homewrecker. She loves Justin, but only as a friend. Rihanna apologised over the ridiculous nonsense that's been printed. Newly released court documents have - literally - revealed a blow-by-blow account of Chris Brown's shocking assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

A police officer's report from the night the R&B star launched a vicious attack on the Barbadian beauty inside his Lamborghini have described the incident in graphic detail.

Brown was convicted of felony assault and on Tuesday was sentenced to five years probation, and 18 days of community service, to be completed in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia.
