Robbie Williams Biography

Robert Peter Williams, commonly known as Robbie Williams is a British pop singer. Born on February 13, 1974 in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Williams' early pop career started with the hit boy band, Take That, led by singer-songwriter Gary Barlow. Formed in 1991, the band’s success in UK with eight #1 singles to their credit was a motivating factor for other aspiring band groups. A bit roguish he was that Robbie seemed to be an odd man out in the band. He had many differences of opinion with other band mates and finally he left the band in 1995.

After leaving Take That, Williams took to rock & roll lifestyle after associating with Britpop band Oasis. Somewhere in his musical career, he became exposed to drugs and drinks. The battle he waged against his drug and alcohol addictions later enticed lots of media glare. During this time he added nearly 18 kg of flabbiness and started appearing in public with unclean dress and unshaven face. Williams broke away with Oasis, and since then Noel Gallagher (of Oasis) has sarcastically said about him so, "That fat dancer from Take That…". The UK music media had lost all hopes on him as a successful musician, taking account of his misbehaved nature

By 1996 Williams was prepared to kick off his solo career. His first single "Freedom" was released in August 1996. The follow up "Old Before I Die" came out in 1997, after he returned from the detoxification clinic. In UK both the singles were chart toppers. This provided a favorable atmosphere for introducing his first solo album, Life Thru A Lens, later that year. Though the album was not well received, its last song, the 'ballad' "Angels" in Christmas 1997, catapulted the album as well its creator to fame. In 2005, at the Brit's 25th anniversary, Angels won special awards for best songs of all times. Williams soon achieved celebrity status with a number of other top ten singles. His second album "I've Been Expecting You" based on the James Bond/spy theme headed the UK charts in October 1998.

Sing When You're Winning, the album released in 2001 unleashed the #1 UK hit single "Rock DJ." The video content of this song stirred up a massive controversy. The video showed Williams in a roller, stripped off, proceeding to 'strip off' his own flesh, muscles, organs and feed the female dancers with them and dancing until he metamorphosed into a dancing skeleton. The scathing criticism that gushed in seemingly had the power to halt the momentum of his career, at least for some time.

In 2002 Williams parted ways with his long-term writing partner Guy Chambers. But after six months, they reunited in connection with the work of their next album. In late 2002, Escapology was released, which brought out the single "Feel". This first single in the album was a great hit in Europe. The video scenes of "Come Undone", the next "Escapology" single, was drastically censored by MTV Networks Europe since Williams was depicted debauched. Though fully dressed, he was shown having three-way sex with two women.

After the split with Chambers, Williams came into contact with a new songwriting partner, Stephen Duffy, with whom he has written several new songs. Currently unmarried, Williams now lives in Los Angeles, California. In British media speculations run high about his uncertain sexuality and romantic life and he is sometimes assumed to be a smooth womanizer. In 2002, Williams entered the BBC's list of the 100 Greatest Britons, through public voting. But, he was also voted to the 17th position in Channel 4's 100 Worst Britons poll.
