The song has a very melancholy tone. Chester Bennington has the only vocal part on this, and he sings about how "the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey and the sun will set for you." This is where he is talking about how eventually, everything ends. To dust you shall return (that's where the world is embraced in grey; death is here and you're going back to being the dust of the earth). The sun sets, the day is over - your life is done. The shadow of the day refers to what happens when a person dies - only their memory is left. Their memory is the shadow of their life. Shadow of the day.(thanks, Kay - Chicago, IL)

Actually, i think this song is about a relationship that comes to an end. "sometimes solutions aren't so simple" because sometimes, you just can't fix the relationship. "sometimes goodbye's the only way" so the only answer is to break up and walk away. So the sun will set (on the relationship) and embrace the world in grey (symbolizing the type of grey, gloomy feelings of a failed relationship) although it can also pertain to a death. Which is partially what makes this song so poetic, it's very versatile in meaning.

The song is about someone who is dying. People want them to keep fighting for their life, but "sometimes goodbye's the only way". And then the part that says "the sun will set for you is refering to the end. When does the sun set? At the end of the day, so really it's a metaphor of this persons death.

This is one of my fav songs, I love it! I don't know why though, but if you listen to the 2nd chorus, there is more beat to it, I noticed that when I was listening to the radio. Listen and hear what i'm talking about!

LP's my favorite band, but I can't stand how this song,Numb,In The End, & What I've Done (I don't really about What I've Done it's not that good) have become really popular. I mean they need as many people listening to they're music as possible but playing these songs on KMX & other pop/rap/hip-hop stations is a disgrace,because they're being played to the crappiest artists of all but & all the pop/rap/hip-hop "lovers" have no respect for lyrics! Lyrics are practically everything & these are far too good for them & their poppy crap lyrics & music!

This was the main song in the video tribute for Mickey Renaud. The Windsor Spitfires hockey team Captain in Windsor Ontario Canada. He collapsed at his home before heading to the arena to make a guest appearance for family day that many fans attended. The whole county was in shock and mourning at this terrible accident. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 5th round of last years draft. If you'd like to see some of his video tributes you can search from them at youtube. I don't like Linkin Park too much, because I think their tunes are all too similar to each other. Some kind of heavier boy-band-pop metal for girls, and more like softer metal with a emo-feminim touch for boys.

Anyway... I JUST LOVE THIS SONG!
Due to its simplicity... it's got a complete hold on me. It fills my heart with melancholic pleasure.

I think this is Linkin Park's answer to U2's "With or Without You"
