Once my lover, now my friend
What a cruel thing to pretend
What a cunning way to condescend
Once my lover, and now my friend
Oh, you creep up like the clouds
And you set my soul at ease
Then you let your love abound
And you bring me to my knees
Oh, it's evil, babe
The way you let your grace enrapture me
When well you know I'd be insane
To ever let that dirty game recapture me
You made me a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I been swinging all around me
'Cause I don't know when you're
Gonna make your move
Oh, your gaze is dangereous
[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/shadowboxer-lyrics-fiona-apple.html ]
And you fill your space so sweet
If I let you get too close
You'll set your spell on me
So darling, I just wanna say
Just in case I don't come through
I was on to every play
I just wanted you
Oh, it's so evil, my love
The way you've no reverence to my concern
So I'll be sure to stay weary of you, love
To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn
And so I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I been swinging all around at nothing
I don't know when you're gonna make your move
Yeah, I'm a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I been swinging all around me
'Cause I don't know when you'll make your move

Fiona Apples ''shadowboxer'' and ''sleep to dream'' gave me the strengh to end a long drawn out relationship. I called his bluff and freed myself to become me again.

This song has one of the catchiest openings--musically--that I've ever heard. If I'm not listening to it on iTunes, I'm playing it on the piano--what I KNOW of it, anyway. [ Feh. Me and my sheet music... ^.^; ] Shadowboxer is quite addicting, I say. Creative rhyming abound in this song, I tell you. It's not every day that you hear phrases like "grace enrapture me" and "game recapture me" in poetry and song, is it? My favorite part of this song is definitely the second prechorus--the second half of the second verse, I guess you'd call it?--that starts with "oh, it's so evil, my love..." This part, I LOVE: ** So I'll be sure to stay wary of you, love To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn ** I love the words, especially the second line. I love singing this song--and whenever I get to that part, I get excited, even if I'm just listening--I love how it sounds when she sings it, too. [ Yes, I'm a dork. ^.^ ] It seems like the most emotional part of the song to me, along with the last time through the chorus. Hmm. I'm determined to learn how to play ALL of this...
