Kanye West and Lil Jon were big winners at this year’s Source Hip-Hop Awards (Oct. 10, 2004). The rapper-producers each took home three awards. West, who led the pack with seven nominations, won for breakthrough artist of the year, album of the year for “The College Dropout,” and video of the year for “Through The Wire.”

Lil Jon took home the award for producer of the year, and won in the R&B/rap collaboration category, along with Ludacris and Usher for Usher’s club hit “Yeah!” Lil Jon also won in the single of the year-collaboration category for his contribution to the Youngbloodz single “Damn.”

Other Source winners included Ludacris for male solo artist of the year, and the Ying Yang Twins for group artist of the year. Usher and Alicia Keys took home awards in the R&B category for male and female artist of the year. “Right Thurr” won Chingy the solo artist award for single of the year, while Terror Squad grabbed the single of the year- group award, and the best female rap collaboration award (with Remy Ma) for “Lean Back.” The fat tape song of the year award went to Ja Rule for “Clap Back,” and Jay-Z was honored as lyricist of the year.

Dr. Dre and Ed Lover gave out the first Source award in 1991 on Yo! MTV Raps, and the first televised Source Hip-Hop Music Awards show took place in 1994.
