As another poster has already mentioned, self and self-revelation are a big part of the theme, but also tradition--what the Zep boys considered European tradition, anyway. The lyrics are a paean to paganism, and that's what made the song so threatening to the religious "backmasking" crowd; they saw it as a recruitment poster for pagans.

Please play stairway to heaven along with the lyrics right hear so you can understand that this song is about understanding that songs may appear to have two meanings but its just A "Rock and not a ROLL!!!" and if you still dont understand.....thats perfect don't understand... because thats what led Zeppelin want you to understand.....

If you dont know the song is about its self. about what you will be thinking when you hear the song about what you think its about and what it really is about not want others want you to think its about. at the end of the song it says And if you listen very hard "The tune will come to you at last.(you will understand its not about what you think) When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll.(witch means its just rock and not some kind of roll like a roll as in something you should just listen to not have any other reason but to be rock)" every thing makes so much scence it made me cry no lie i felt like a **** for bealeaveing the "Stairway to ****" theory and you should too. its just rock the song is about understanding that and just listening to the music. but if you "listen very hard" your head will start to wonder" and you shouldnt you need to just listen to the music. and i wish i could of done that but now i understand every thing. led zeppelin i love them so much.
