Sugababes Biography

The Sugababes are considered to be one of the most popular all girl singing groups (21st century) in the UK. The group was formed in 1998, with Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhan Donaghy as its members. During their teenage years, the trio signed a recording contract with London Records. They were supposed to be called “Sugababies”, but another group beat them to it. The girls then decided to change their stage name into: Sugababes.
The Sugababes’ very first single under their debut album called One Touch was their hit: “Overload”, which reached the Top 10 and was even nominated for “Best Single” in the BRIT awards. During the band’s tour in the country of Japan, Siobhan was replaced with Atomic Kitten’s former member: Heidi Range. Speculations were that the members got into a big fight, causing Siobhan to leave, who, by the way, was reported to have suffered from depression.
In 2001, London Records decided to let go of the Sugababes because of the unsatisfactory sales of their album “One Touch”. This was during the time that the group was halfway through their second album. The Sugababes looked for another record company and ended up sealing it with Island Records.
“Angels With Dirty Faces” was the group’s second album which held “Freak Like Me”, characterized by Richard X’s recording, a backed song of Gary Numan, and lyrical content from one of Adina Howard’s songs. “Freak Like Me” became number one in the UK, with the album holding the number two spot in the UK chart as well as turning triple platinum, with more than one million copies disposed of in Europe alone. The Sugababes also wowed the people during the BRIT Awards of 2003, giving them the “Best British Dance Act” award for that year.
During the latter part of 2003, “Three” was launched and was also nominated for “Best Dance Act”, “Best Group”, and “Best Album”, also reaching the 3rd spot in the UK Album chart. The year after, the Sugababes collaborated with Band Aid for the recording of “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, dedicated to the people of Sudan who have experienced famine. Other artists who took part in the recording include: Dido, Robbie Williams, Chris Martin, etc.
The Sugababes’ 4th album became famous for the song: “Push the Button” which became a chart-topper in the UK. It was also considered as the Sugababes’ most well-received hit in the US. In the last quarter of 2005, Mutya Buena left the group and was replaced with Amelle Berrabah. With Berrabah in the group, the Sugababes released another number one hit in the UK: “Walk This Way”, a single dedicated to charity. Just last year, the Sugababes were once again nominated during the BRIT Award (Best British Single).
