How could he know this new dawn's light
Would change his life forever?
Set sail to sea but pulled off course
By the light of golden treasure
Was he the one causing pain
With his careless dreaming?
Been afraid, always afraid
Of the things he's feeling
He could just be gone
He would just sail on!
He would just sail on
How can I be lost?
If I've got nowhere to go?
Searched the seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost?
In remembrance I relive
And how can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?
These days drift on inside a fog
It's thick and suffocating
This seeking life, outside it's hell
Inside intoxicating
He's run aground like his life
Water much too shallow
Slipping fast, down with the ship
Fading in the shadows
Now a castaway
Blame all gone away!
Blame gone away
How can I be lost
If I've got nowhere to go?
Search for seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost?
In remembrance I relive
And how can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?
Forgive me
Forgive me not
Forgive me
Forgive me not
Forgive me
Forgive me not
Forgive me
Forgive me, why can't I forgive me?!
Set sail to sea but pulled off course
By the light of golden treasure
How could he know this new dawn's light
Would change his life forever?
How can I be lost
If I've got nowhere to go?
Search for seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost?
In remembrance I relive
So how can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?

These lyrics..Wow..I have lived these words..More than a few times...I was lost for 20+ years to a self induced pain and torment...Feeling hopeless, I prayed nightly for death..I was lost , but never a lost cause...I was looking for things to make me happy, and when I got what I thought that I wanted, I found my self never content....Christ found me in the bottom of my bottom...The Light of the world..Amen

Call me crazy, but every time I hear this song I think of the Pirates Trilogy, In the first movie the piece of treasure that Elizabeth takes from Will at the beginning changes their lives forever. In the second movie, the Black Pearl was ran aground, and in the third movie the scene where they are in the arctic, followed by Davie Jones not forgiving himself for betraying Calypso... While I know the song is part of a deeper meaning and the Unforgiven trilogy, It still reminds me of those movies. I wonder if there was any influence....

Unforgiven III is special, best in a long while by anyone... GC

You could make a touching movie based on all the unforgiven songs

I have exactly the same feelings with necro2100 every time I hear this song it always brings tears to my eyes especially the part where it says "so how can I blame you when it's me I can't forgive". The Unforgiven trilogy is incredible, I think that deep down James Hetfield is a very sensitive person and the unforgiven songs reflect that. The only thing I didn't like was the guitar solo, in my humble opinion it was soulless and completely unfitting for this song, the greatness of the lyrics surely deserved something much more...apart from that the song is perfect

On the contrary I think the solo is amazing and perfectly placed. The solo really helps to convey his struggle. Just really listen to that part. Metallica is amazing and conveying stories without lyrics. Just listen to Call of Ktulu, Suicide & Redemption, or To Live is to Die.

James Hetfield said in an interview that basically in the Unforgiven 2 he ****s her (his love) and in the final chapter, Unforgiven III, he ****s himself. The rest of the song is just a metaphor for saying that simple thing. He is riddled with guilt over what he did and not being able to forgive himself, he takes his own life.

Right now I'm listening to it with tears in my eyes. No doubt Metallica is a living legend. Setting sail and searching for wealth feeling his heart is getting cold. How could he know this new dawn's light would change his life forever. After all the pain and miseries in part 1 and 2 hes wise enough to realize his mistakes and even he is forgiven now ~tears in my eyes~ he cant forgive himself. I dunno how to say more just as i said Metallica is a living unique legend.

This song could be all of what you guys are saying. but it does contain a mash of The Odyssey references.
sintron
I think its somewhat referring to The Odyssey, because he talks about setting sail to sea and then going off course in search of treasure.
