Coldplay Viva La Vida Lyrics
Songwriters: Berryman, Guy Rupert; Buckland, Jonathan Mark; Champion, Will; Martin, Christopher A J;
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemies eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People could not believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries Wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringings
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh

vespucci43 – I was pretty convinced that the 2nd to last chorus said “won’t” and the last said “will” and I think if you listen carefully you will hear there is a slight change in nuance in the word between the two chorus, however, after listening to it again really carefully and despite the change in nuance I think you’re right, that the word is “won’t” in both chorus’s.

I have no idea what the band intended when they wrote this song, but it is a brilliant one, and I made a video of how it might apply to the Bush years.
Go to youtube and
for "Viva La Bush" to see it if you'd like.

The song DOES NOT say "will".
It says "won't", but to appeal to all the Christians who populate these sites, the sites have deliberately changed the word.

I love this this song, so those of yu who are criisizing it, calm down coz its just a song, a great song

vespucci43 - I'm not saying it isn't about Bush and I couldn't care less if it was! And for all I know it may well be.

As for the lyric change - the actual lyric for the first chorus is indeed "won't call my name" but then it does change to "will call my name" later - so obviously some kind of oxymoron going on there.

You can definately over analyse lyric and bands often use this devise to set off exactly this type of attention.

ignorance! the bible? jesus? irak?

oh mother!

Male Jul 07, 2008 at 01:04 PM by vespucci43

what, you mean the same way this site and all the other lyric sites are butchering viva la vida lyrics?

Q magazine asked Chris Martin about the line "I know Saint Peter won't call my name" sung in "Viva la Vida". Martin replied: "It's about… You're not on the list. I was a naughty boy. It's always fascinated me that idea of finishing your life and then being analyzed on it. And it's that runs through most religions. That's why people blow up buildings. Because they think they're going to get lots of virgins. I always feel like saying, Just join a band (laughs). That is the most frightening thing you could possibly say to somebody. Eternal damnation. I know about this stuff because I studied it. I was into it all. I know it. It's still mildly terrifying to me. And this is serious

I'm pretty sure you just butchered those Lennon lyrics.... yeah, you did

Male Jul 07, 2008 at 12:38 AM by vespucci43

Imagine

"Imagine there's a heaven
It's easy if you try
A hell below us
Above us bright blue sky

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And one religion too

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one."

Isn't it interesting how you can make a couple of small changes to a song and completely alter the whole meaning?

Female Jul 06, 2008 at 10:26 PM by kinzi816

This song is about how in the bible Saul became the apostle Paul and changed from a man who persecuted Christians to becoming one himself.

Male Jul 06, 2008 at 02:14 PM by vespucci43

@marrcco

if it's not about bush can you answer me these 3 questions

why has this site deliberately changed the word in the St Peter line from "won't" to "will"?

youtube: coldplay dancing politicians
why did coldplay make this video?

why is there an artistic representation of 9/11 on the album cover (far right)?

Male Jul 06, 2008 at 09:21 AM by marrcco

Anyway... back on topic -
Pretty sure this IS NOT the actual meaning of the lyrics but just an observation on some obvious similiarities:
How about the connections with Nero? He ruled the world, left Rome disguised after revolutionaries wanted his head. The bells of Jerusalem could be the metafor for the strengthening of (and eventual downfall of Rome)... Christianity. People couldn't believe what he had become after initial great leadership of the Empire. And as for "just a puppet on a lonely string"? Well it's well known there was only one person in control of Nero - his mother, who he eventually had murdered!

The reference to ST Peter? How about that even after all the bad things he did - including blaming the Christians for the fire that consumed Rome, (although he had a secret affinity with Christianity) he still thought he could be called to Heaven! Why? because by burning down Rome and starting the ball rolling on its downfall he did Christianity a big favor by destroying the Empire.

BTW - again this isn't my opinion of the lyric meaning - just an observational theory to throw into the pot!

Male Jul 06, 2008 at 08:31 AM by marrcco

vespucci43 - it just doesn't read as an ironic statement. If it was truly meant as ironic it was one of the subtlest uses of the rhetorical devise I’ve seen in a long while... well done!

Male Jul 06, 2008 at 06:17 AM by vespucci43

@ marrcco

Try looking up the word "irony" in the dictionary.

Irony is where you say one thing but mean the complete opposite.

Now read my original post again, but reverse everything round.

Female Jul 06, 2008 at 02:23 AM by God's_girl13

this whole song is about how Jesus used to have everyone's trust and everyone loved him but then Pontious Pilot decided he wanted to crucify him so all the people turned against Jesus. They sang this song at my church tonight.

i completely 100% agree with LosAngeles911. i had posted a comment earlier with my whole speech.

Male Jul 04, 2008 at 07:34 PM by LosAngeles911 Male Stars

I don't think it has to do with any war. I think the whole war is a metaphor. He loved where he was in life but he got too used to it and he lost it all. But that's just my opinion.

can someone help me? i dont know really what this song is supposed to tell the reader.

Female Jul 04, 2008 at 07:07 PM by _scene_and_obscene_

the more i thought about this song, the more i listened to it and the more i looked at the lyrics, the more i thought it was about julius caesar... except for the fact that caesar was stabbed to death by his council or whatever...

Male Jul 04, 2008 at 07:04 PM by shamanmisba

Well i believe this song has reference to God and the roman empire, nothing at all to do with french ppl, hence "i hear Jerusalems bells a ringing" with Jesus being "crucified" in Jerusalem, "Roman cavalry choirs are singing" gee, the french had alot of reference in the middle-east! Also, "seas would rise when i gave the word" this is either referring to God or it could be a metaphor for the power of the roman emperor, "revolutionaries wait for my head on a silver plate" the Roman emperor also had his haters, the rebels, who wanted to overthrow him, the roman rebellion which saw to the emperor being assasinated so that the senate could rule. So my views are that this song is a referrance to God and the roman emperor and maybe a bit of Jesus i think it has no reference to the French, be it u believe in God or not. Thats my opinion, its the most logical reason, its linking being the roman emperor to God/Jesus.
