Of course the unspoken part of this is that the place where we will meet again may well be heaven. This song came out when men were going off to war, and that is what it is about. Time does dilute the original context somewhat. My childhood in the 70s was as far from the war as the 70s is from us now, this song would always play over montages of men leaving on trains for the front and so forth. There was always a sinister edge to this song to me, the shadow of death hung over it. I always felt this song was very "there there here's an insincere pat on the back now get back to work" vibe. But of course, I suppose that's what you want in wartime. For people who aren't you to make sacrifices, maybe the ultimate one. This song is wartime propaganda. My loved one is dead but a pop song gave me a nebulous hope so it's all okay! woot.

i really like this song. they played it at my friends farewell party cos shes moving 2 austrailia it made most of us cry cos we were upset thet she was moving and that we may never see them again
